Mission:
A Choir by the Bay
Location: Vulcan, Kir Province
Timeline: Two weeks Prior
ON:
T'lari stood at the space port on Vulcan awaiting the shuttle that would take her off her planet and to Earth. She sighed as she reflected on the disaster that was her life at the moment. Starfleet held new hope but right at this moment she couldn't bring herself to see it. What occupied her mind was the fact that she was standing here alone. It shouldn't have surprised her but for some reason it did.
Sighing she squared her shoulders and looked around. Today she would say goodbye to Vulcan because she didn't know if she'd ever see it again. She hoped she would but Vulcan held so many mixed feelings for her and at this very moment those memories and feelings were overwhelming. She was fighting very hard to keep them schooled like a proper Vulcan. She listened as the 30 minute call was made. Deciding that she didn't want to be in the space port anymore she got up and slung her small bag over her shoulder. She'd had a small little crate that held the only items for her that had any meaning but it was already on the shuttle. Squaring her shoulders she headed towards the shuttle.
"T'lari! Wait."
T'lari froze. She turned at the familiar voice. "Professor?"
T'Yari ran up followed by none other then T'lari's eldest brother Sodel.
T'lari stood still and raised an eyebrow. "What are you doing here?"
T'Yari stopped in front of her. "I wanted to wish you well on your journey." She held out a container. "Some...food. I made you something to eat as you are traveling." She turned to the tall Vulcan, Sodel, and gave him an elbow. "Your brother wanted to say something."
T'lari turned to him. "I do not think we have anything to say."
Sodel briefly closed his eyes. In the last little while he'd realized how much his sister had to put up with. "I wish..." He paused. "I wish to apologize for not being a better older brother."
T'lari shrugged. "An apology is illogical. It changes nothing from the past and it means nothing in the present as I will most likely not return to Vulcan again, thus we can conclude it means nothing for the future."
T'Yari bit her lip. She looked at Sodel who stepped forward. "Do not say that. If you will allow me I would like to make up for ..."
T'lari held up her hand. Suddenly she found a strength that she didn't know she had. "There is nothing to be done. What has happened is like water spilled from a glass. One cannot put it back into the container once it's spilled. I think it best to part here." She held up her hand. "Live long and prosper Sodel."
T'Yari's heart broke for both Sodel and T'lari. She had told him this may happen. She stepped in. "How are you for credits."
"Yes," Sodel said. "I can send some to you."
T'lari shook her head. "Over the last months I have sold everything of mine from my room. I believe you will find it empty but for the bed and the chair and desk. I have what I wish to carry. I have some credits." She looked at her brother. "If you truly wish to apologize and make amends do not tell anyone in the family where I am. You may tell them, that which they looked upon as an unwanted addition to the household has left and shall not return. It will make things easier on all involved."
Sodel let out a breath that was shaky. "T'lari not all of us felt that way. I'm sorry for what you went through." He paused. "I wish to be your brother, I wish to try and be a better brother to you."
"You ignored me as did the rest the only thing that makes you slightly more palatable is that you did not say anything unkind to me. The fact still remains you did not stop the family from saying unkind things or for treating me as nothing but an annoyance who should never have been born so I do not feel the need for any familial relationship with you at this time. I think humans have a saying. I was born alone and alone I shall walk through life until I return to the dust from which I was created from."
T'Yari briefly closed her eyes. It tore her heart. "Listen the school has a scholarship. I hope that you're not mad but I entered you into it and you got it so there will be some credits monthly coming your way."
T'lari raised an eyebrow. "Thank you. Professor T'Yari you have always been kind to me. I have you to thank for the opportunity I am about to undertake. If you wish to speak with me I will welcome your calls." She parted her fingers in the Vulcan salute and said, "Live long, prosper, and be ...happy." She knew T'Yari would appreciate this as she herself chose to embrace her emotions.
With that she turned and headed into the shuttle.
Sodel watched his sister leave. He briefly turned to T'Yari and said, "Scholarship?"
"Yes, an account where you can deposit credits and I will forward them to her to have while at Starfleet and until she gets on her feet."
"You... lied to her?"
"Omission. I did enter her into a scholarship, she did not receive it but you will make up for that since you wish to make amends. This is your step up moment where you can be the brother you never were. This is your chance to make your sister's life a bit easier. If our betrothal means anything to you and if your concern for your sister is genuine...."
Sodel bowed a little. "I will comply." He stared at the shuttle and had to pause and rub the area around his heart. He had let T'lari down but he would try to be better and he would try to make amends not just for himself but for all that she had been through, for all the loneliness and unkind words she'd had to endure while growing up. Thanks to T'Yari's help he had, as humans say, seen the light when it came things. "Live long and prosper T'lari...live a good life," he wispered.
"Come on Sodel. Let's go." He followed the professor out.
On the shuttle T'lari strapped herself in and pulled out one of the few things she was taking, a book. She read until the shuttle lifted off. She stared at Vulcan as it grew smaller and smaller. Her new life was beginning and she could not help but feel a little afraid of what the future would bring. With that fear also came an excitement that was born of the knowledge that many paths were now open to her. She would try to prosper and build a life for herself. It was time to find her place in the world. The earlier hope she did not have about her future seemed gone. In having confronted her brother it felt as if she'd released something she had been holding inside. She didn't hate Sodel, he had never been mean to her and in his own way had shown small kindnesses throughout a life that was lacking in it but she had still been on her own. He hadn't defended her once growing up when she was treated as a mere inconvenience by her other siblings and her parents. Saying something had unlocked a part of her and allowed her to shed at least a little bit of the anger and pain and in it's place was the hope she had been unable to find earlier. Maybe things would work out.
